As part of the growing trend of reexamining existing and mostly outdated drug policies, the New Zealand Drug Foundation has recently conducted a broad survey of attitudes toward cannabis use across the population. The poll’s results came out as follows: 67% of New Zealanders approve of recreational cannabis use, either by legalization or decriminalization, while 87% approve of its medicinal use. This reflects a steady increase in public support for cannabis use and probably did not go unnoticed by the country’s health minister who has voiced his opinion that the country’s drug laws should be liberalized.

Perhaps most noteworthy is the fact that, by comparison with previous surveys, it was found that public support for cannabis use in New Zealand has risen across the entire political spectrum, regardless of party affiliation. It’s particularly this finding that goes to show just how much of a consensus cannabis use has become in New Zealand.
